David T. Kinnear
“The surname Kinnear was first found in Fife, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. In the reign of Malcolm IV (1153-65) a family of Norman origin was established in the north of Fife as vassals of the priory of St Andrews; the head of the family took his surname from the lands of Kinnear (probably Gaelic ceann iar – ‘west headland’).”
